Awareness-raising in the teaching of pragmatics

Abstract: What is pragmatics? Is it something we all know but can’t quite explain clearly? And why do we actually need to teach it? Given good reasons, how then can one teach pragmatics effectively? This workshop will explore these questions. Furthermore, the concept of awareness-raising will be defined and embodied into actual classroom activities. The goal is to invite educators to: 1) become more aware of pragmatics as an essential part of EFL teaching in Japan; 2) develop the ability to provide metapragmatic information to students; and 3) devise methods to both develop and assess students’ pragmatic competence.

「発表とミニミニワークショップ：
Readers Theatreを活用した大学英語の授業」
浅野 享三（南山大学短期大学部）
要旨：高校卒業までに英語による音読や音声表現を十分に学べなかったと感ずる短大・大学生は少なくない。一方、スピーチやディベートを英語でできるとする短大・大学生も決して多くはない。「英語が話せるようになりたい」という学生の学習希望を考慮して、英語が話せるようになるための橋渡しとして、Readers Theatre（音読劇・パフォーマンス）を活用した大学1・2年生向け授業を紹介する。今回は、ワークショップ形式を取り、実際に参加してもらいながら考察する。学生出演ビデオの視聴と分析データの紹介も予定。
